A Note About Greg Summers of Cleveland OH (Yahoo ID - "exxacta")In the years I have listed live tournaments on this site I have listed all open-entry tournaments I have had knowledge of regardless of hosts or location. That policy is about to change. The live pinochle tournament in Sacramento CA was held 19 - 21 Sep 08. The entry fee was $100 per player, to include the tournament entry and banquet fee. Approximately ten days before the tournament Mr. Summers called me, told me he might not be able to attend and asked me, since I did plan to attend, would I be available to act as Tournament Director (TD) in his absence. I replied in the affirmative. On Tue 16 Sep 08 the local tournament organizer, Jitters344, contacted me and told me the tournament had been cancelled because the hotel had not received their advance payment for the tournament and banquet. We exchanged telephone numbers and I called her for further information about the hotel. On Wed 17 Sep 08 I called the hotel, spoke to a lady named Dana, the Director of Sales and Catering, gave her my credit card information and had the tournament and banquet put back on the schedule. I informed Jitters344 that I had done this and the tournament would be held as scheduled. When I arrived at the hotel Fri 19 Sep 08 I spoke with Dana. She said the hotel was willing to issue me a credit on my account provided Mr. Summers' account could be charged. It could not - the charge would not go through on the credit card number he had provided. Mr. Summers took in $1,100 of pre-entry money through PayPal for this tournament. There were five entries who paid their $100 entry fee at the door. That $500 was the only money we had to use as prizes, and was fully expended. I have yet to receive any correspondence or remuneration from Mr. Summers for that tournament. Jitters344 has received $100 from him. In a couple of phone calls the week after the tournament Mr. Summers assured me he was going to send me $1,000. He hasn't - or, if he has, I haven't received it yet. But no matter what, I don't think it would take this long to get a cashier's check, a treasurer's check or a money order to me from Cleveland OH no matter what method of delivery he selected. He had even posted on the Internet that I have been compensated - as of this date I have not. I paid the Hilton Inn in Sacramento a sum of $918.27 to cover tournament and banquet expenses. I have the signed receipt for same. If I had not done so, there would have been no Sacramento tournament. Period. When I called the hotel the Wednesday before the tournament the hotel had already cancelled the tournament and the banquet. People flying or driving from out of town would have had no tournament to attend. In addition, I have sent Jitters344 a check for $81.73 to cover the difference between the $1,000 I was supposed to receive and what I had actually spent. I figured that would help her defray the additional expenses incurred in her being the local contact for the tournament. I have a copy of that check and she has acknowledged receipt of same via a telephone conversation. In addition, from his Las Vegas NV tournament last spring, there still is the CD/picture deal where he sold a CD with pictures and a tournament t-shirt for $10 per package. Some have said that he never came through on that deal. His explanation was that the t-shirt shop with whom he was dealing closed down. No matter - Mr. Summers took the money at the tournament for these items and never delivered. Any reputable person would have bitten the bullet for the advanced expenses already paid to the closed shop, contacted another shop and had the shirts made up and delivered a long time ago. All of the above information can be proven, either through receipts for expenses and/or sworn statements from the individuals involved. There is no libel, slander or defamation of character involved and/or intended here - just a presentation of the facts. With this in mind, in an attempt to deter anyone from attending live pinochle tournaments where any future occurances of financial mismanagement by Mr. Summers could take place, I will not list any tournament in which he has any financial interest. This does not and will not affect live tournaments in Detroit MI (hosted by Kletta) and Cleveland OH (hosted by Bobs0414), who, while having been associated with Mr. Summers' now-defunct National Championship Pinochle League in the past, have always independently managed their own tournament's financial affairs. johnph77 - 06 Oct 08 |
